With MobiMB, you can browse your gallery folders on many colour Nokia phones, including the 7210 and 6610. These phones support audio and graphics files in a variety of formats. With MobiMB, now you can manage your media folders by simply dragging and dropping the files from your PC!
The software connects to the phone using a standard infrared (IrDA) port - just select the file you want to upload, and drop it into the folder on the phone.

Configuration
Before the application can connect to the phone, you need to configure the connection to the phone. This can be done from the File menu item.
Further help on configuring the connection can be found by clicking the help button in the connection manager window.

Graphics and Logos
If your phone supports the Gallery feature, MobiMB allows you to drag and drop images into the folders for use as background (wallpaper) images or logos. Modern colour mobile phones support a range of common file formats, including GIF and JPEG. You can set a wallpaper using the menus in the phone. You can also set an image as the wallpaper, startup logo or operator logo by right-clicking the file you want and using the Use as... context menu option. You can set the logos back to default in the File menu. The phone should resize the images automatically to fit the available space, but for best results you can resize the images yourself using your favourite image editor. Large images will fill your phone's memory very quickly so it is always a good idea to do this. The 7210 and 6610 have screen sizes of 128x128 pixels, and support operator logos of 100x50. The 3510i and 3350 have screen sizes of 96x65 and support operator logos of 78x21. Other phones may have different screen dimensions.

Browsing your phone
MobiMB is simple to use and will be familiar to anyone who can use the Windows file explorer. On the left of the screen is a tree view showing the available folders inside your phone. You can expand subfolders or click on a folder to open it. The contents of the current folder are displayed in a list in the right-hand pane.
You can add files to the folders simply by dragging from Windows into the right-hand pane. You can also copy files from your phone to your PC by dragging in the other direction.

Supported MIDI Files
The exact capabilities of your phone's MIDI player depends on the design of the handset, however the below information may offer some guidance when you are converting writing your own ringtones using MIDI sequencing software.

For example, the Nokia 3510 supports 4 voice MIDI, which means that only 4 notes can be played at any one time. In addition, only certain instruments are defined in the phone. Below is a list of the standard instruments available in the 3510 (similar rules will apply to other phones in the Nokia range):

The Use As... Menu
You can perform various operations on your phone's files by using the right-click context menu (options also available in the Actions menu in MobiMB).

Just click the right-hand mouse button over a file in the right pane in MobiMB. The options that are available will depend on the file type and on your phone's capabilities:

  • Wallpaper - use an image as the background on the phone
  • Operator logo - (GSM only) replace your operator's name with the selected image when in range of the network
  • Startup logo - show the selected image as the splash screen when the phone starts up. Some phones will show this instead of the "Nokia Hands" logo, others will display both the Nokia logo and the custom one. If you want to remove the Nokia Hands logo, ask us about how you can do this with NkProfile.
  • Shutdown logo - show the selected image as your phone powers down
  • Screensaver - use the image as the screensaver
  • Shutdown tune - play the selected MIDI ringtone (or even an MP3 file) as the phone shuts down
  • Menu background - use the image as the background when browsing the phone's menus

Screen 2 options - some phones have two displays and can have certain logos set independently. The screen 2 options enable you to set these options (dual screen phones ONLY)
Set Default - reset the selected option to its default (blank) state. The set default options are shown when no file is selected or when you right-click a gallery folder or blank area in the list view.

Games and Applications
Many mobile phones contain the ability to run Java MIDlets, applications designed specifically to run on mobile devices. MobiMB can upload and download applications designed for your mobile phone. You can store applications in either the Games or Applications menus in your phone.
MIDlets are distributed in two parts, a .jad file and a .jar file. The .jad file is a text file containing information on the application and where it is located during download. The .jar file is the package containing the application itself. To upload to the phone you need both files to be located in the same place. To install an application into the phone, drag the .jad file into either the games or applications folder in the phone. You should only select the .jad file, and not any others.Note that sometimes the original download location of the .jar file may not match the filename on your hard disk. In these cases you will need to edit the MIDlet-Jar-URL parameter in the .jad file to match the filename of the .jar file, or vice versa. You can edit the .jad file using notepad.

Playlists

Some of Nokia's more recent models support playback of streaming audio files, and (starting with the Nokia 6230) also contain playlists. Playlists enable you to select a sequence of tracks to play in order.MobiMB contains a fully integrated playlist editor, making the creation of playlists on the phone much simpler than previously possible. To create a new playlist in the current folder, simply select the option from the file menu.To edit a playlist, double-click on the .m3u file (or single-click if you have the auto-preview option switched on), and the file should load in the bottom-right pane of MobiMB.The playlist pane contains the list of currently selected track titles and filenames. Note that the file contains links to the songs on the phone or in the MMC card, not the song data itself. If you later delete one of the files from the phone, the playlist will not play. To add a song from one of the folders on your phone or the MMC, simply browse to that folder, then drag the file(s) into the correct position in the playlist pane. You can rearrange the tracks later by selecting playlist items and moving up and down using the arrow tools on the playlist toolbar. You can rename a track title by clicking on the item, then clicking on its name. An edit box should appear into which you may enter the new title. Once your playlist is complete, save it back to the phone using the save button on the playlist toolbar. You can access the playlist in the phone according to the instructions in the manual for your handset.

Advanced options

Warning: Certain advanced options should only be used if you understand what they do. Even though their use should normally be safe, certain phone firmware versions can react badly if these options are not used correctly.

Automatically set the clock on the phone

When this option is selected, MobiMB will set the date and time on the phone to the time in the PC. This allows dates and times to be displayed correctly in the phone.

Preserve timestamp during transfer

With this option selected, MobiMB will preserve the modification date when transferring files between the phone and the PC.

Allow Java options transfer

Java games can store data such as high scores and other settings in the phone. Normally this information is not transferred when you drag an application or a game to the PC. Selecting this option allows the settings to be stored to the PC as an RMS file.

This option also allows RMS files to be transferred into the phone - you must make sure that the RMS file you use matches the one created by the application you are installing. To transfer an RMS file when installing an application, select the JAR, JAD and RMS file, and drag & drop all three at the same time.

Always show built-in ringtones

This option takes effect the next time you connect to your phone or when you restart MobiMB.

Some phones store built-in/preinstalled ringtones in a separate area from the gallery. Normally these tones are not accessible and cannot be deleted, however MobiMB can access this area if you enable this option. One reason for wanting to do this might be if you have an early firmware version that only allows preinstalled tones to be selected as a group tone. Installing a tone into this area enables you to get around this problem.

This area of the phone has limits on how much you can upload - avoid uploading files larger than 8 Kbytes and do not upload more than a few MIDI tones. Not all the original tones in this area are in MIDI format, so they may not all be playable on the PC.
